Haft-Seen table setting for Nowruz celebrations in Vancouver, VPM Group RE/MAX

As the vernal equinox arrives, marking the first day of spring, VPM Group RE/MAX sends our warmest wishes to everyone celebrating Nowruz! This ancient festival, meaning “New Day,” represents renewal, rebirth, and hope for the year ahead. Therefore, it’s a time for families to come together, reflect on the past year, and set intentions for the future.

Nowruz is deeply rooted in Zoroastrianism. Millions around the world celebrate it. It is particularly important in Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and beyond. Furthermore, here in Vancouver, our diverse community embraces the spirit of Nowruz. It brings vibrant traditions and customs to our city.

What Makes Nowruz Special? A Celebration of Renewal

Nowruz is much more than just a holiday. It’s a cultural and historical event. It embodies the spirit of optimism and new beginnings. Typically, the celebrations last for several days. These celebrations often involve unique traditions.

  • Haft-Seen (هفت‌سین): A traditional table setting is central. It features seven symbolic items starting with the letter “S” in Persian. Specifically:

    • Sabzeh (sprouts) – symbolizing rebirth and growth

    • Samanu (sweet pudding) – symbolizing affluence

    • Senjed (dried oleaster fruit) – symbolizing love

    • Sir (garlic) – symbolizing health

    • Sib (apple) – symbolizing beauty

    • Sumac (sumac spice) – symbolizing sunrise

    • Serkeh (vinegar) – symbolizing patience

  • Cleaning and Renewal: A Fresh Start Spring cleaning, or “Khaneh Tekani,” is a common practice. It symbolizes removing negativity and preparing for a fresh start.

  • Family and Friends: Strengthening Bonds Visiting loved ones is important. It strengthens bonds and creates joyous moments.

  • Fire Jumping (Chaharshanbe Suri): Burning Away the Old On the eve before Nowruz, people jump over bonfires. This symbolizes burning away misfortune. Thus, it welcomes the new year.

  • Traditional Foods: A Culinary Delight Feasting on delicious Nowruz dishes is a delight. Sabzi Polo ba Mahi (herbed rice with fish) is popular.
